UASU-UoN Sign Internal CBA 2017-2021
On Monday, March 23, 2026, The University of Nairobi Management and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU)-UoN Chapter, have signed the Internal CBA 2017-2021 agreed on the first addendum to the 2017–2021 Internal Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) following consultations between the two parties. The signing comes after a 7-year stalemate.
Negotiations for the CBA were officially launched on 12th August 2024, after which the Joint Negotiation Committee of Council and UASU held a series of meetings to deliberate on the agreement for one and a half years.
During the CBA Signing Ceremony, UASU Secretary General, Mr. Maloba Wekesa expressed his sentiments to the Management on their commitment to the negotiations and the signing of the CBA.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hutchinson emphasized the importance of having staff feel heard and procedures followed. She reiterated the Management’s commitment on seeing the CBA fully implemented. She described the signing as a shared commitment to creating an enabling environment for staff to thrive while advancing the mission and mandate of the University of Nairobi.
As part of the next steps, the agreed addendum will be forwarded to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for a No Objection letter. Thereafter, the CBA will proceed to registration at the Employment and Labour Relations Court in line with the Labour Relations Act, 2007, before implementation.
The meeting concluded with a call for the immediate implementation of the non-financial provisions of the agreement, while the remaining aspects progress through the required statutory processes.
Present during the signing were Council Chair representatives Prof. Ayub Gitau, Prof. John Mande, Prof. Moses Nyangito, Prof. Lilac Osanjo and the UASU-UoN Leadership.
