UoN hosted the Inter-County Football for the Goals Championship 2025
The University of Nairobi played host to an inspiring and action-packed two-day tournament dubbed the Inter-County Football for the Goals Championship 2025 (ICFGC), a national event, organised by the Global Youth Forum (GYF) in partnership with the United Nations Football for the Goals (FFTG). The tournament was held on May 24, 2025, in celebration of World Football Day, under the powerful theme of using the game as a tool to eradicate poverty and hunger in Kenya.
The event that was held at the university’s sports grounds brought together 22 teams from across the country, 14 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams. This highlighted the power of sport in uniting diverse communities around a shared goal of sustainable development.
After intense matches and spirited performances, 44 Bulldogs FC from Zimmerman emerged victorious in the men’s category, while Mukuru Talent FC lifted the trophy in the women’s competition, showcasing talent and resilience from some of Nairobi’s most vibrant communities.
Running alongside the matches were a series of community-focused clinics and awareness sessions, including: Gender-Based Violence (GBV), sensitisation, football coaching and mentorship, climate change and sustainability talks, health and wellness sessions, capacity-building workshops and an innovative Archery 4 The Goals segment.
A significant highlight of the tournament was the launch of the “Priceless Ball”, a symbolic globe-trotting football that seeks to collect one billion signatures in support of ending poverty and hunger, two core mandates of the GYF. Already bearing over 2,000 signatures, the ball made a special stop at the University of Nairobi, as attendees took a stand against global inequality.
“When you sign it, you also commit to eradicate poverty and hunger,” noted Peter Omondi, GYF Chief Executive Officer and Founder, during the launch.
Rose Marete, Director of Sports at the University of Nairobi, welcomed the partnership with optimism and gratitude. “We are honoured to host such a meaningful event. Football is a powerful tool for change, and we look forward to a continued partnership that empowers our youth and uplifts our communities,” she stated.
The Inter-County Football for the Goals Championship 2025 not only showcased football talent from all corners of Kenya but also reaffirmed the sport’s ability to drive conversations and actions on key global issues. With the University of Nairobi leading by example, the goal of scoring against poverty and hunger is well underway.
