The University of Nairobi on Wednesday 18 June 2025 held the Productivity Improvement Strategy Cascading Workshop for deans of faculty, departmental chairs, and administrators as a way of mainstreaming productivity improvement within the institution.   The initial workshop to cascade the strategy to a section of university management was held on 28 May 2025.

Speaking during the well-attended event at the University of Nairobi Towers, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jesang Hutchinson, reiterated that productivity improvement was in line with the university’s obligation of contributing to national development. The VC said that it was, therefore, “crucial for the University of Nairobi to lead the way in this important national initiative”. The strategy was developed under guidance from the National Productivity and Competitiveness Centre (NPCC) of the State Department for Labour and Skills Development, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.

The VC acknowledged the great investment of time, effort, and other resources expended in developing the university’s first ever Productivity Improvement Strategy and promised to support its implementation.    “This strategy will take the university to the next level in our pursuit of academic excellence and contribution to addressing societal challenges”, she said.

The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Ayub Gitau, observed that the Productivity Improvement Strategy was “a roadmap that empowers the University to systematically manage and improve productivity across various facets of its operations”. The DVC (Academic Affairs) added that the strategy offered “an opportunity for us to make a difference in securing a sustainable workplace for the present and future generations”. The workshop was also attended by Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Development, Prof. Jackson Maalu, and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Human Resource and Administration (DVC HRA), Prof. John Demesi Mande.

The Chairperson of the Productivity Measurement Committee Prof. Florence Muindi thanked the Vice-Chancellor for supporting the team throughout the process of developing the strategy. The committee’s presentation of the strategy elicited useful discussions from the participants that will go a long way in supporting its implementation as well as guiding future commitments based on the university’s rich diversity.

Implementation of the Productivity Improvement Strategy begins immediately under the coordination of the Directorate of Planning and Performance Management.
