Varsity enters deal to support women in cross border trade

The University of Nairobi through the Women Economic Empowerment HUB (WEE-HUB) has signed an MOU with the Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development and the Collaborative Centre for Gender Development and the Collaborative Centre for Gender and Development (CCGD) that will see the three support women in cross border trade.
The collaboration is on research, development of policies and programmes and project monitoring that will support women participation in cross border trade, provision of child care facilities and simplifying of laws and regulations governing cross border trade. The signing of the MOU will eventually lead to economic empowerment of Women Cross Border Traders and communities that rely on cross border trade by marking the beginning of structured engagement.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, Vice-chancellor, UoN, Prof. Stephen Kiama, said that the initiative will lead to economic empowerment of Women Cross Border Traders and communities that rely on cross border trade.
“This is very important for the University of Nairobi and I am pleased that the University will take up the leading role in research activities. This signing of MOU only marks the beginning of structured engagement but the big task for realization of the set goals and objectives lies ahead. It is my desire to see these noble endeavors realized.” said Prof. Kiama.
Dr. Kevit Desai, the Principal Secretary in the State Department of East Africa Community said, “The magnitude and impact that this initiative will have on women and cross border trade will be great. It will promote intra-trade between EAC member states. Currently, cross border trade is at 15%.”
Mr. Masheti Insijila, the CEO CCGD expressed CCGD’s excitement to be part of the initiative.
“The CCGD is a policy and gender institution that partners with like-minded organizations. We are very excited to formally enter into an agreement with the University of Nairobi and the Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development.”
The University of Nairobi is keen on developing collaborations and partnerships with various stakeholders bringing on board their strengths in support of Women Economic Empowerment through activities that include research, innovations and extensions.
