Over the years, the University of Nairobi has been ranked among the top universities in Africa and the world.

On whichever platform be it Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking or Webometrics that has been consistently releasing results, the University of Nairobi has continued to stay in the top 10% bracket.

Recently, the Webometrics ranking released in January 2021 placed the UoN at Position 1 in Kenya and East Africa, Position 13 in Africa, and 1052 in a total of over 30,000 universities ranked globally.

In East Africa, Makere University followed closely at number 14 in Africa and 1100 globally while University of Cape Town, Stellen Bosch and Cairo University taking position 1, 2 and 3 respectively in Africa.

Webometrics ranks universities based on Impact, Openness and Excellence parameters in its ranking. UoN ranked 1181 in Impact, 615 in Openness and 1625 in Excellence parameters.

In Africa, the University of Cape Town has maintained the top position on Impact, Openness and Excellence indicators, for the last 3 past rankings. The University of Nairobi improved 2 positions in Openness, but dropped 2 and 6 positions in Impact and Excellence respectively.

Impact is number of external networks (subnets) linking to the institution’s webpages (normalized and then the maximum value is chosen). Openness is number of citations from top 210 authors, while Excellence is the number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in each one of all 27 disciplines of the full database. Data for the five year period: 2015-2019.
