In a first of its kind, the University of Nairobi held a students’ Recognition Award Ceremony to celebrate the outstanding students in various categories on Friday, May 5, 2023 at the historic Taifa Hall.

What made this edition of Recognition Awards special was the honour of not only outstanding academic performance but also Talent, Research and Publication, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Corporate Social Responsibility, Leadership, Volunteerism, Extra-curricular activities and Sports and Games.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Vice chancellor Prof. Kiama Gitahi noted that over 800 awards will be given making it the largest honours list in the history of the program. In this year’s recognition ceremony, the University covered areas beyond the academic performance. The move aimed at producing holistic graduates and also recognize activities outside the academic realm which are vital for building all round student and citizen of this country and the world.

He applauded, “To those students who will be receiving your awards today, I wish to congratulate you on your great achievement.  I am aware that it takes a lot of sacrifice to get here, and hence the awards you are about to receive are well-deserved badges of distinction for you to carry everywhere you go. Through these prizes, the University appreciates and lauds you for your dedication to the cause, hard work and discipline, perseverance, as well as the willingness to go an extra mile in order to deliver nothing but the best.  Your sterling performance also demonstrates desirable attributes of character building and a solid foundation for growth in the fields that you will pursue going forward. I wish you every success.”

Prof. Kiama acknowledged the donors and partners that made the event possible and he thanked them for the partnership.

The Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Trust Fund representative spoke on behalf of all the donors. She gave a brief history of the fund and its trust in education, ‘The Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Fund was started in 1962 with the sole purpose of giving towards needy students. We believe in education and the diversity in talents amongst us.’

Dr. Collins Miheso, spoke on behalf of the awardees, He expressed his gratitude to the institution, ‘Today we honour those who have excelled in their respective fields. The University has empowered us all to shine in the different areas of our specializations be it in academic endeavours or talents’

The event was characterized by an academic procession, the presentation of the awards list by the Deans of Faculties, and the audience that included the students, staff and alumni of the University.
