UoN is proud to have produced the 1st President to ever graduate from a local University since Kenya attained her independence in 1963.

 H.E Dr. William Ruto is a triple alumnus of the University of Nairobi.  He joined UoN in 1987 and pursued a BSc. in Botany and Zoology (Chiromo Campus) graduating in 1990, he later enrolled for a MSc. in Plant Ecology, graduating in 2011. In 2012, he enrolled for a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology which he successfully completed graduating on 21st December 2018, a ceremony presided over by UoN Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi and witnessed by the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya H.E Uhuru Kenyatta among many other Kenyans from all walks of life.

H.E Ruto’s PhD thesis was titled ‘Influence of anthrologenic activities on land use/cover changes and environmental quality of Saiwa wetland watershed, in Western Kenya.’ 

He has also authored several papers including a paper titled ‘Biological and physico-chemical status of two wetlands in the Nairobi National Park, Kenya’ which he presented for his MSc.

During his time at Chiromo Campus pursuing his undergraduate course, Ruto was an active member of the Christian Union and also served as the Chairman of the University of Nairobi's choir. 

Dr. William Ruto is a registered Gold Life member of UoN Alumni Association and a founding member of Chiromo Alumni Chapter class of 1990.  The University of Nairobi congratulates Dr. William Ruto on being elected the 5th President of the Republic of Kenya.

The 5th President Elect of the Republic of Kenya H.E Dr. William Kipchirchir Samoei Ruto was born on 21 December 1966 in Sambut village, Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County.  He attended Kerotet Primary School for his primary school education and later joined Wareng Secondary School in Uasin Gishu County for his O- level education before proceeding to Kapsabet Boys High School in Nandi County for his A-levels.
