At this year’s Huawei ICT Competition preliminary exams, 17 University of Nairobi students have proceeded to the finals. The students garnered five slots in the Cloud Track and 12 in the Network Track.

The students will attend an online boot camp on December 11, 2021. In this boot camp, they will be competing to secure their space in the regional level and thereafter the best 6 teams will receive awards including internship, certification & training as well as Huawei devices.

University of Nairobi students have participated in the Huawei ICT Competition since its inception in 2018 and have produced some of the best awarded talents in the regional final stages and global final stage in China.

In 2020, Two Kenyan teams of 3 students each won 1st place at the Global Final round which was organized virtually due to the global pandemic. 15 other countries within the Sub Saharan Region including Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and Tanzania are also participating in the 2021 competition.

Huawei has partnered with the University of Nairobi to drive the digital inclusion agenda in its efforts to bridge the digital. At University of Nairobi ICT Academy, Huawei technical certification is offered to UoN students. The competition is a practice based competition and students can choose either a Network or Cloud track. Under the Network track students compete in networking technologies including Routing and Switching, Security and WLAN while the Cloud Track features newer technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, Cloud Service, Storage and Artificial Intelligence.

The Huawei ICT Competition is a competitive ICT talent exchange programme developed globally for university, college and TVET students. It aims to promote a healthy development of the ICT talent and support the integration of the industry and education. It provides students with a platform to compete and acquire certification for them to enhance their ICT knowledge both practical and application skills. The competition themed “Connection, Glory, Future”, brings together the industry partners in order to cultivate, grow and employ young talents from higher institutions of learning. Each year, Huawei organizes ICT Skills competition in Sub-Saharan Africa. Huawei continues to invest heavily in nurturing local ICT talent to compete equally with counterparts from across the globe. This, is in addition to growing the local ICT talent ecosystem, strengthening capacity building and increasing people’s digital competence.
