The Department of Kiswahili invites you to an international UON@50 webinar whose theme is Kiswahili Ulimwenguni (Kiswahili in the Globe) on December 2, 2020 from 2.00 pm.

In its 50 years of its existence, the University of Nairobi has been instrumental in enhancing the growth of Kiswahli and taking it to the world. In the early 70s, Kiswahili scholars, Prof. Mohamed Andulaziz specifically, took Kiswahili to European countries like Germany. Many other scholars like Prof. Wamitila and Prof. Kineene followed later. Prof. Said Ahmed and Prof. Kineene took Kiswahili to Japan. Dr. Mwaliwa spread it to South Africa while Prof Olali and Dr. Mukhwana before him saw to it that the Chinese learnt Kiswahili. In the 1980s, Prof. Kineene was in South Korea and years later Prof. Tom Olali and Prof. Kithaka wa Mbera as well as Dr. Michira were to follow in his footsteps. Both Prof. Lisanza Muaka and Prof. Iribe Mwangi have spread Kiswahili to Latina America and North America. Dr. Jerono took it to Central America and West Africa. Prof. Mbatiah and Prof. Mberia as well as Dr. Michira, Dr. Mungania and Dr. Zaja have taken it to the US.

These few examples underscore the theme of the Webinar organized by the Department of Kiswahili whose theme is “Kiswahili in the Globe.” From its humble roots in East Africa, Kiswahili is now a global language and the University of Nairobi has played a major role in this globalization of Kiswahili.
