The Institute of Anthropology, Gender & African Studies (IAGAS) invites you to an international UON@50 webinar on - IAGAS@50 Day: From A Cultural Division to a Research and Teaching Institute

The Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (IAGAS) will hold an international webinar on December 4, 2020 to celebrate 50 years since its formation. The Institute formerly known as Institute of African Studies (IAS) was established in August 1970 and charged with the responsibility of promoting and conducting original research in the field of African Studies. Although originally established as a research Institute in the model of other research Institutes in the University, over time, teaching has continued to become a core component of the Institute.

Over the years, the Institute has been resilient in maintaining a delicate balance between its research and teaching mandates. In this regard, the Institute has conducted a number of original research projects which have informed policy and at the same time produced graduates in the fields of Anthropology, Gender and Development Studies and Heritage Management to meet the labour demands in Kenya and the Eastern Africa Region.

This webinar brings together distinguished scholars and stakeholders who have worked with the Institute in various capacities in the past to reflect on the mandate of the Institute in the last 50 years and to explore how to position the Institute in the coming years.
