Varsity signs MOU with IOM

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to contribute to migration health in the region.

The partnership is a culmination of discussions between UoN’s Clinical Epidemiology Unit, located at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and IOM.  The MOU will promote research on migration health, provide student internship opportunities at IOM, among other issues.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Finance, welcomed the initiative as timely, especially in regard to the University’s commitment in improving the quality of research in the country. He said that research on migration health is important as it influences key decisions made by the government in a bid to accommodate migrants and ensure they receive quality services. The partnership has placed the University at the forefront in addressing migration challenges.

Ashraf El Nour, Regional Director, Regional Office for the East and Horn of Africa, IOM, thanked the University for supporting IOM over the years. He said that IOM is also committed to the MOU and is looking forward to participating in various initiatives that will come about as a result of the partnership.

Prof. Isaac Mbeche, Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Student Affairs, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, Principal, CHS, Prof. Simon Mitema, Director, Centre for International Programmes and Linkages, Prof. Erastus Njeru, Director, Clinical Epidemiology Unit were among those who attended the meeting.
