Call for Applications - Afretec Short Stay Researcher Mobility

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The AFRETEC Knowledge Creation Pillar invites researchers from the University of Nairobi to apply for a two-week Short Stay Researcher Mobility opportunity at an AFRETEC member university.

Objective
The mobility aims to facilitate researchers to meet with prospective collaborators for two weeks of focused joint work towards developing and submitting a competitive research funding proposal. The targeted funding call should be an open or upcoming call with a submission deadline within the next six (6) months.

Eligible AFRETEC Host Universities

Researchers may propose collaboration with any of the following AFRETEC member institutions:
 Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (Ethiopia)
 Agostinho Neto University (Angola)
 Al Akhawayn University (Morocco)
 Carnegie Mellon University Africa (Rwanda)
 The American University in Cairo (Egypt)
 Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal)
 University of Lagos (Nigeria)
 University of Nairobi (Kenya)
 University of Rwanda (Rwanda)
 University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa)

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit a brief concept proposal indicating: 1. Name and details of the funding call being targeted; 2. Proposed AFRETEC partner/host researcher and institution; 3. Research project concept to be jointly developed; 4. Expected grant amount/value of the targeted funding opportunity; and 5. How the two-week mobility will contribute to developing a strong and competitive proposal.
The application must be accompanied by a letter from the proposed host partner confirming:
 Their willingness and readiness to host the applicant for the two-week mobility; and
 Their confirmation that they are jointly working with the applicant on the proposed project concept.
What the Mobility Covers
Successful applicants will receive support for the two-week mobility, including:
 Return air travel;
 Accommodation and meals;
 Ground transportation;
 Visa fees; and
 Travel insurance.

Selection Applications will be assessed as they are received. The opportunity will be awarded to the first proposal assessed to demonstrate the strongest potential for developing a competitive and successful funding proposal, subject to eligibility and availability of funds. The call expires when the opportunity is awarded or on 15th October 2026 at 11.59 pm. Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate clear collaboration, a well-defined funding opportunity, a strong partnership, and a realistic pathway towards submission of a competitive proposal within the required timeframe. This initiative seeks to strengthen research collaboration across the AFRETEC network and leverage existing researcher collaborations, mentorship programmes and research clusters to generate joint funding proposals.
