Andrew Liveris in a group photo with top UoN hierarchy after the lecture.

Accomplished industrialist, author and distinguished business leader calls on students to participate in solving world's problems.

This was said at an interactive lecture by Andrew Liveris, Chief Executive Officer, President and Chairman of Dow Chemical Company, science, business and innovation came together.

From an interesting angle, Mr. Liveris was able to demonstrate Dow’s unique business model.  Dow deals with products made by scientists and sold by business gurus thereby creating a crossroad of business and science.

The company is one of the largest manufacturing firms in the world whose turnover last year was US $ 60 billion. Dow manufactures material in transportation and infrastructure, health, nutrition, consumerism (agriculture, water treatment, personal care items and more), petrochemicals, polymers and much more.

In his lecture, Mr. Liveris highlighted the importance of innovation for the growth and development of the country. The world needs new technologies that are solutions to its greatest challenges.

He challenged the students not to let progress end with his generation as aspiration and creativity of the new generation is needed.

On the same note, Dr. Joseph Wanjui, the Chancellor, University of Nairobi, called on students to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them.  Others in attendance included Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Admimnistration and Finance, Prof. Peter Mbithi, Deputy Vice-chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, Prof. Lucy Irungu, Principal College of Biological and Physical Sicences, Prof. Bernard Aduda among many scholars and top executives from Dow.

Dow intends to give at least ten students opportunities to join its ranks.

Thanks to the University of Nairobi Fraternity for the auspicious occasion of hosting The CEO DOW. I am proud to be associated with you as an Institution of Choice in promoting research and development in Kenya and beyond borders true to your mission and vision statements. The visit by the World Giant Chemical company executive could not have come at any other better time than now when the youth are in dire need of the fundamental information towards financial freedom in future. This is in tandem with the Kenya's vision 2030 that seeks to transform the country's economy to a middle class status. The CEO's mastery and genius approach in running DOW company has left many perplexed across the globe. Yes, I mean he has given other big companies a good run for their money. I may not finish these lines of describing the incredible personality of the DOW CEO plus the culture of exemplary performance of the DOW company, but the reality will remain - the time for creativity and innovation in Kenya is now or never. The Kenyan youth should think outside the 'Box' and create Jobs through their creativity and the pool of talents these youth are endowed with. On yearly basis the Kenyan institutions of higher learning graduates thousands of young, enthusiastic and energetic elites which the current industry/job market cannot absorb. Their beaming hopes evaporates with gnashing realities outside school; joblessness and cruel environment that does not support the very infant ideas of business start ups. I want to buy into the inspiration of CEO to my fellow Kenyan youth. Self employment is synonymous to the 'road not taken' by many due its associated uncertainties and risks. But let the unwavering passion to transforming Kenya through creativity and innovation be our overriding principle in our endeavors.

God bless University of Nairobi, God bless Kenya and the patriotic citizens - indeed the people
