School of Business Wins Financial Research Challenge
The University team comprising of Anthony Kimani, Edgar Jean Ojiambo, Ruskin Onyambu, Laurancia Barasa and Justus Wambua outperformed other Universities in the region to win the finals. The team will represent the University, the country and the East African region at the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Finals, where it will be joined by teams from the American University in Cairo and the University of Pretoria to represent African. The finals will be held from the 13th to 19th March 2012 in London at the Barbican.
The challenge involved conducting a fundamental analysis of Athi River Mining Ltd and coming up with an analyst’s report with a recommendation to investors. The team was assessed on the quality of the report and oral presentation by a panel of judges and CFA charter holders and investors. The high quality of the report and the presentation made earned the university the top spot ahead of competition from a host of universities which included Strathmore University, Kenyatta University, USIU and JKUAT.
The team is confident of battling with renowned universities such as University of Warwick (UK), European Business School (German), Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC)(France) , Stockholm School of Economics(Sweden) and University Carlos III of Madrid (Spain)among others.
Upon winning the EMEA region finals, the team will represent the region at the Global finals in New York in April. In the event of winning the Global finals, the University stands to receive a 2,000,000 USD grant from the CFA Institute not to mention media exposure globally as the University’s name shall be used in all advertisements of 2013 leg of the challenge.
The team was guided by Mrs Winnie Nyamute as the Faculty Advisor and Mr Francis Mwangi as the Industry mentor.

More of this needs to be encouraged by the University. Students should be encouraged not to focus on being employed, but to be employers. They can only do this by understanding the market, through market and investments analysis.
