During their last AU summit at the auspices of the New African Union Headquaters Complex in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia all the head’s of states from Africa decided to recognize the life and work of Wangari Muta Maathai, the founder Distinguished Chair of Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies. 
Among other decisions, the Summit encourages the AU Commission, within the framework of the Make Peace Happen Campaign (MPHC), as well as member States, the private sector, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and other rerated international organizations and foundations, in cooperation with the Green Belt Movement (GBM), to take all the necessary measures to mobilize resources in support of “Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI)” as an African Centre of Excellence, to encourage research on environmental governance and its linkages with peace, human rights and democracy in Africa. This is a great endorcement of the University of Nairobi Initiative to recognize one of its Alumni when it established the Institute.

The summit also created the Wangari Maathai Award for Outstanding Achievements in Environment and Biodiversity Conservation in recognition of her work and commitment to preserving the environment.

 

In addition, the 18th African Union Summit has renamed the “African Environment Day which is cerebrated every March  to Wangari Maathai Day.
