The event was organized by The Organization of Nairobi Science Students aka ONUSS. It was held in Millennium Hall 2, Chiromo campus, University of Nairobi and was attended by all and sundry. The theme of the event was Environmental Conservation. The event started at 10pm though the anxious campuserians had been tricking in the hall from 6pm. The judges of the day were

  • Richard Maloba
  • Hellen Nyamuiru
  • Susan

The contestants who had undergone rigorous training for an entire week with some of the best Trainers that the University could offer were spic and span on the very day. 10 ladies and 7 gentlemen walked the runway tirelessly in search of the most coveted title in Chiromo. The models had so much to showcase. There were five categories for the evening.

First was the Introduction category where the contestants were to dress in green tops and black bottoms was a way of conveying the message of environment consciousness. It was interesting to see the contestants walk the red carpet with their faces hidden behind a manila which they held high with a letter written on it until they all read “ENVIRONMENT”. Quite a unique and creative thing to do. It also gave the fans an opportunity not to judge the models by their faces but with what they had to offer.

The next category was African / Asian wear. Never before had this happened in Chiromo to have so many Asians participate in the beauty pageant.

With the World cup by the corner, the newly introduced Sportswear category was next. The sound of Vuvuzela ushered in the models. The Disk Jockeys didn’t frustrate the crowd.  There was music for everyone. The Rock lovers, the Reggae addicts, the  mugithi fanatics..You name it.

Casual wear was followed by the creative wear category. The models were each given a chance to explain what they had in mind as they came up with the costume they wore. For judging purposes, it had to be in line with the theme of Environmental Conservation.

Finally came the much awaited category. The Evening wear. You had to be there to have a feel of this. With blues in the background and a lovely couple walking the “T” creating an atmosphere of love, the fairy tale illusion of “Happily ever after “seemed not so far away.

Several dance groups were present. The most memorable of them being the “Sawala dancers”. Words would fall short to describe the three young boneless men displaying their best talent on stage. Neither the cold night nor the rain could sour the jovial mood that was present. A Mchongowano contest was held amid cheers and jeers to search for the” King of Mchongowano” There were tokens for all who participated .

Mr. T “the Minister of righteousness” and Skavenja were the Emcees and ensured that the crowd was fully entertained. The culmination of the event was two hours past midnight when the king of Hip Hop, the one and only ABBASS KUBAFF took the crowd by storm. He performed his latest hits and before long everyone was on their feet. The bouncers at all entrances to the hall ensured that the event took place without a y security hitch.

Devanshi M. Patha (a Med student) and Rota Odhiambo were undisputedly outstanding in all the categories. As the newly crowned Miss and Mr. Chiromo, they were appointed as the torch bearers of Environmental conversation in Chiromo. We wish them well as they represent Chiromo in the Mr. and Miss UoN later in April this year. The first runners up were Valentine Wanjohi and Taseer F.Din and finally, the second runners up were Virginia Mwangi and George Okoth.

At the dawn of Saturday, it was crystal clear that Chiromo is not only the land of the living and the dead ….but its also the science crescent where beauty and brains meet.
