INTRODUCTION TO THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The German club has an active medical students' exchange program. With the assistance of the Patrons Dr. Kollmann and Dr. Elisabeth Mueller, we have been successful to have German students on an exchange program at the medical school for several years now.

This arm of the program (German students coming to Kenya) is fully functioning and has been highly successful. The second arm( Kenyan students going to Germany) is still undergoing expansion to include more students.

EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR KENYAN STUDENTS TO GERMANY

We also have Kenyan students from the University of Nairobi going to Germany. Usually these are fourth year medical students going to German hospitals. We also have students from the German studies department going for exchanges.

THE ELECTIVE TERM.

Medical students from the University of Nairobi are required to undertake an elective term at a different learning institution or hospital. The aim is to expose them to new skills, techniques and procedures not readily available at our university teaching hospital. On their return the knowledge gained is integrated in our local set up.

Having the elective term in Germany will offer them new approaches in medical practice and expose them to the latest medical technology and innovations. It also offers them the chance to experience the German culture, traditions and history while allowing them to practice their German on a day to day basis in a practical setting.

It is also an avenue to take our local experiences, practices and share them with fellow medical students in Germany.

The elective term period runs from October to December annually.

EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR GERMAN STUDENTS TO KENYA

German students have the opportunity of:

  • Doing Part of their Practical Year( PJ) in Internal Medicine or Surgery.
  • Participating in the Undergraduate Community Health Program in the University of Nairobi( In partnership with the SCOPH section of the BVMD. Note: Open to students in their eighth semester or beyond)

PARTICIPANTS

The exchange student may select a department they wish to rotate in either:

  • Surgery: either Orthopedics or General Surgery or Neurosurgery.
  • Internal Medicine
  • Community Health
  • Human Anatomy
  • Medical Physiology

The university teaching hospital is KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL which is also a referral hospital.

ELECTIVE TERM IN KENYA:

As our club name Die Bruecke (the bridge) implies, we aim at being the bridge between the two cultures, customs, knowledge (medical and social) of Kenya and Germany.
Hopefully this will ultimately translate to a better mutual understanding and foster future collaborations in research and learning between the two nations especially among medical students.

Having the elective term in Kenya offers you a new experience in medical practice and exposes you to a different set up.

It also offers you a chance to experience the diverse Kenyan culture, traditions and history.
