Characterization and Development of an Integrated Management of Fusarium Head Blight of Wheat in Kenya

Fusarium head blight has re-emerged as a major disease affecting wheat and other small grain cereals all over the world. A study on Fusarium head blight of wheat was funded by IFS and carried out from October 2004 to April 2007. The study found that the disease is highly prevalent in major wheat producing districts in Kenya. The disease was found to be caused by a complex of different Fusarium species, F. graminearum being one of the major species. Epicoccum and Alternaria were also found to be major contaminants. Wheat grain was found to be contaminated with mycotoxins deoxynivalenol, T-2 toxin, zearalenone and aflatoxin.
