PROJECT TITLE: SCREENING OF SOME PLANTS USED TRADITIONALLY FOR ANTI- FUNGAL ACTIVITY IN VIHIGA DISTRICT, WESTERN KENYA

Project Overview:

Background:- Recent developments including the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and the advent of the HIV/AIDS has precipitated an increase in incidences and prevalence of fungal and other microbial infections.  Non-affordability of the recommended drugs, relapse after treatment and resistance to the drugs is identified as a hindrance to the effective management of the infections.   Several plants, since time immemorial, have been identified and found useful in the treatment of these infections. Women participants in the study have been appraised on medicinal plants identification, preservation, hygienic handling of the materials and biodiversity conservation methods. The preparation and introduction into the community of a cost effective and acceptable traditional remedy, a body wash, derived from the studied plants, has been effected.  The study product is thus empowering   the study group with an easily accessible, effective, acceptable and most of all affordable traditional remedies to improve their health and financial status.
