MOU for new Gender Research Centre signed

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has entered into a partnership agreement with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development

that will see the realization of the National Gender Research and Documentation Centre which will be located within UoN.

The Memorandum of Understanding which was signed at the University marks the beginning of a collaboration that will give research a central role in dealing with gender affairs. Through UoN’s Gender Affairs office, the three stakeholders will work together to provide training and support for the establishment and operation of the centre. In addition, joint research projects and funding applications with likeminded entities will also be looked at.

Prof. George Magoha, Vice-Chancellor, UoN, noted that the University was keen in meeting the demand for gender studies in developmental undertakings. The Vice-Chancellor assured the guests present that the University will be committed to ensuring that the terms in the MOU are realized.

UNESCO’s, Director, Multi-Sectorial Office, Mr. Mohamed Djelid, said that the agency is looking forward to engaging in various research projects that will offer key solutions in dealing with gender issues in the country and the region as well.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development, Prof. Jacqueline Oduol, thanked the University and UNESCO for being part of the initiative. She called on the University to set the agenda in gender and women equality issues.

Also present during the signing of the MOU was Prof. S. Mitema, Director, and Centre for International Programmes and Linkages, Prof. Winnie Mitullah, Director, Gender Affairs and officials from the ministry.
