The newly formed University of Nairobi Council has just been inaugurated. The Council is headed by a prominent lawyer cum businessman, Mr. John Simba - who was reappointed by the government for a three-year period.  Mr. Simba has headed UoN Council for the last six years. Others reappointed to the Council alongside Simba include Dr. Betty Gikonyo as the Vice-Chairperson and Mr. Philip Kinisu as Honorary Treasurer. Apart from the three officials who served in the previous council, the governing organ now has many new faces from different sectors which include Susan Mboya, Dr. Kitili Mbathi, Sheila Mmbijewe, Eunice Mathu, Dr, Ekuro Aukot, Mr, Sammy Langat, and Dr. Philip Toroitich among others.

Addressing the new Council during its inauguration yesterday, at the Council Chamber, the Chancellor Dr, Joe Wanjui, emphasized that their appointment was grounded on professional diversity to inject new ideas in management of the University and scale up the sterling performance of the previous Council. He congratulated the previous team for their outstanding service in the last six years especially in successfully steering the public sector reforms, initiation of new projects and completion of stalled projects of the late 80s and early 90s. He challenged the new team to surpass their predecessor by confronting some perennial challenges that face the University.

Members at the inaguration

The Chancellor reminded members that government funding is not adequate to meet the needs of the institution and challenged the team to assist the university in getting more corporate sponsors to chip in as happens in the developed countries. Dr. Wanjui recognized the support extended by Barclays Bank in the endowment of the Business Finance Department that resulted in the appointment of an internationally renowned scholar and pleaded for more support from other organizations.

Represented in the council is top university management, college representatives, student representatives and staff union representatives

Congrats!! This is a factor that will drive this Institution to even Greater Heights. We need more of this kind of brains and kind of thinking to continue elevating the Institution. The council is Vibrant and will continue being even more action oriented. We have the UoN grow to an African Giant in this field. We would like to see it right at the top of all. Am so glad to see alot of perfomers that i know..have lots of confidence in this council.

Now new council...know your challenges well. We believe in you.

My plea...in Mombasa we need this UoN felt equally more on science courses-for instance to take advantage of the Coastal resources for learning-the Ocean for instances.

A Musando.

Excellent! But, true ...to the words of the Chancellor, Dr. Wanjui, "The council must strive to surpass the performance of the immediate former council. The immediate former council did very well. For example, "The state-of-art morgue in Chiromo Campus". Excellent, again!

A polite request to the current University of Nairobi Council ...(i) A state-of-the-art conferencing facility (ii) A five-star hotel/guest house (iii) A state-of-the-art Business Centre. (iii) A sate-of-the-art Hospital, fully owned by the UoN with the aim of serving the general public, and not just limited to staff.

These could be smart-approaches to generating funding for the University of Nairobi. Remember ...Dr. Wanjui mentioned, a need to sourcing additional funding. Please, just try the (i)-(iv) ideas that I have proposed above.

great idea!! i totally agree with ideas 1-4!!!as well as othere more financial sources can be exploited with students as part time employees to get funding for their fees ,this will remove over-dependence on the inefficient helb, as well as fees will be paid ontime so as programmes can run smoothly!!

I don't see my staff union representative on the list. The composition is otherwise very good. I hope this oversight is corrected by incorporating representation from each of the three university staff unions. Thanks.
