In a colourful ceremony held on July 2, 2013, at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS), the Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) launched the STAKE Project. The STAKE project (Stabilizing Kenya through Resolving Forest Related Conflicts) was officially launched by the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Prof. Judy Wakhungu. To mark the auspicious occasions, nine ceremonial tree species were planted by the project stakeholders at WMI site to celebrate the walks and works of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai who was the chair of the STAKE Project steering committee.

The retreat, held in Nakuru, was co-ordinated on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor by the University’s Chief Legal Officer, Ms Rebecca W. Ngondo, who is a trained Integrity Assurance Officer. Ms Ngondo is the coordinator of the Integrity Programme. Several facilitators engaged the participants on a number of issues including the Constitution Implementation Commission on the Constitution of Kenya 2010 (Chapter Six (Leadership and Integrity) and Chapter Thirteen (Public Service and State Officers).

The Exhibition was organized by the Commission for Universities Education (CUE) formerly Commission for Higher Education (CHE) in which all public and private institutions of higher learning took part. -

The 5,000 students admitted to the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Architecture and Engineering, Biological and Physical Sciences, Education and External Studies, Health Sciences and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The University of Nairobi has just concluded a two-day symposium seeking to analyse the ‘Supreme Court’s decision in Raila vs Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and Others.’ The forum sought to provide a better understanding of the case, not only for legal and intellectual reasons but also for public interest. Sponsored by the Ford Foundation and organized by the School of Law, the symposium attracted over 200 students, lawyers, communication experts and civil rights activists.

The programme has developed the capacity of the University as a player in the higher education sector, to implement the Constitution, ensuring that it practices integrity in its activities. Ultimately integrity has been institutionalized and personalized in the University community. Through the sensitization process the University held television talk shows, public lectures, colloquia, symposia, panel discussions, legal and medical clinics, tree planting and clean up exercises among others. The objectives of the program included facilitation towards improved access to information contained in the Constitution, set up policies systems and procedures aimed at implementing the Constitution as well as the provision of tools and resources.

The University of Nairobi (UoN)recorded excellent performance at the 2013 Nairobi International Trade Fair by taking the top positions in the various categories.
UoN scooped first position in seven categories, second position in three categories and third position in three categories. The University of Nairobi was named the best university stand and the best institution of higher learning in developing and advanced technology.

Prof. David Musyimi Ndetei, defended his Doctor of Science defense at the University of Nairobi (UoN). Titled ‘Studies and Works in Mental Health to Inform Practice and Policy in the African Social Cultural Context,’ Prof. Ndetei presented his research journey that commenced in 1979. He has authored six books, 21 monographs, over 250 publications in professional journals and book chapters. He has also been published in over 700 articles in the Nation Newspaper and has appeared in numerous radio and TV shows.
This is the third Doctor of Science degree candidate that the University of Nairobi has evaluated since its inception in 1956. -

The University of Nairobi was today honoured to host the President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Hon Uhuru Kenyatta when he laid the Foundation stone for the University of Nairobi Towers and planted a commemorative tree.
The function was also graced by Deputy President, Hon. William Ruto, Her Excellency, the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary, Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, Cabinet Secretary, Internal Security, Joseph Ole Lenku. -

The 7th All Africa University Games kicked off today at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Sports Grounds with 13 countries from different parts of Africa and 500 athletes participating. The games to be competed in include soccer, karate, netball, swimming, table tennis, track and field events, American football, and volleyball.
Those who graced the opening include officials of the Federation of International University Sports (FISU) and intercontinental bodies from Europe and Asia, administrators from local universities and sports authorities and students. -

There was pomp and colour as an exciting 7th Edition of the All African Universities Games 2014 came to an end today at the Chancellor’s Court. Egypt was crowned the overall winners as Ghana took position two and Kenya settled for position three. The All African Universities Games saw 13 African countries compete in various sports disciplines.

Chandaria Foundation has made a generous contribution of Ksh. 50 million towards the construction of the University of Nairobi Towers. In addition, the center for performing arts which will be located on the 5th floor of the towers will be named ‘Chandaria Centre for Performing Arts’ in honour of the Chandaria Foundation.

Former University of Nairobi Chancellor Dr. Joseph Barrage Wanjui unveiled his third book, ‘The Native Son’ in a well attended function by scholars, family members, friends, and the business community in the Vice-Chancellor’s Palour.
The book chronicles his experiences as a family man, corporate leader and businessman and will be of great value to researchers, students of economics and business. According to the author, the book provides real insights into how the Kenya nation was built by businessmen despite the all-too-frequent antics of certain misguided politicians. As a sign of giving back to the community, Dr. Wanjui announced that all the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Joe Wanjui Foundation that supports the girl child education in the country

The Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, made an extensive tour of the College of Biological and Physical Science.
Dr. Vijoo, who was visiting the College for the first time since her appointment as Chancellor, was accompanied by the Chairman of Council, Dr. Idle Farah and the University of Nairobi management team lead by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha.
During the tour, Dr. Vijoo had an opportunity to visit various College units, sampling some of the College facilities and activities in place. The Chancellor also interacted with faculty and students, and she challenged the students to work hard, acquiring skills that will contribute to the development of the nation. -
