- For 46 years IDS has been engaged in a rich variety of research projects relevant to Kenya's development. Over one half of the research projects at the IDS have been of an institutional or collaborative nature. This builds on new and old networks and furthers the multi-disciplinary character of the institute. Others are contractual and at both institutional and individual levels.
The IDS Strategic Plan identifies four research themes; globalization and localization; population, environment and sustainable livelihoods; institutions and governance; social inclusion and identity.
- IDS institutional research projects range from studying the informal sector (for which IDS is the pioneer) to industrialization; poverty; production of the Kenya Human Development Report under UNDP and; a long tradition of studying local and civil society institutions and their contribution to development. Some of the current studies are on higher education funded by Ford Foundation; World Economic Forum funded by World Economic Forum; collaboration with University of Leipzig funded by DAAD and with University of Duisburg-Essen funded by DAAD.
- Planning Impact Studies in collaboration with Ministry of Planning and Donor Proliferation and State Capacity in collaboration with DFID and IDS Sussex.
