Research
- For 41 years IDS has enganged in a rich variety of research projects relevant to kenya's Development. Over one half of the research projects at the IDS have been of an institutional or collaborative nature.This builds on new and old networks and furthers the multi-disciplinary character of the institute.Others are contractual and at both institutional and individual levels.
The IDS Strategic Plan identifies four research themes; globalisation and localisation; pupulation,enviroment and sustainable livilihoods; institutions and governance;social inclusion and identity.
- IDS institutional research projects range from studying the informal sector (for which IDS is the pioneer) to industrialization; poverty;production of the Kenya Human Developement Report under UNDPand; along tradition of studying local and civil society institutions and their contribution to development.Some of the current studies are on Higher Education funded by Ford Foundation; World Economic Forum funded by World Economic Forum; collaboration with University of Leipzig funded by DAAD and with University of Duisburg-Essen funded by DAAD.
- Planning Impact Studies in collaboration with Ministry of Planning and Donor Prolifelation and State Capacity in collaboration with DFID and IDS Sussex.
Research Associates
The IDS offers facilities and opportunities for academic interaction to scholars from other Universities who come to or are resident in East Africa. Prefernce is given to social scientists with research interests that are closely related to the current research priorities of the institute.The Minimum period of association is six months.
