LIFE SAVING REFRESHER COURSE

         PARTNERSHIP: Kenya lifesaving Federation

  TOPICS COVERED:

a)      General topics

  •   Safety ,health and hygiene in swimming.
  •   Pedagogical issues and communication in swimming.
  •   Administrative issues and record management in swimming.
  •   Principles of training and coaching in swimming.
  •  Injuries, first aid, prevention  and treatment in swimming
  • Legal issues in swimming.
  •  Sports psychology in relation to swimming.
  •  Nutrition and swimming.
  •  Principles of water treatment and filtration system.
  •  Organizing a swimming gala

b)      Lifesaving skills.

  •     Lifesaving swimming styles, entry and exit, water heading floats.
  •     Rescues-   Reaching,throwing,wade and throw,acompnied.

University Of Nairobi WomenTeams’ Participation In KUSA Universities Games University of Nairobi

 

The first kenya Inter-University Women event was held at University of Nairobi in March 2012. Several Universities participated in the event and it was felt that this should be a  National University annual event in future.

Structure

DIRECTOR, SPORTS & GAMES RESPONSIBILITY/ ROLE


• To allocate and prescribe departmental staff duties and responsibilities.

• To guide and supervise the designing and implementation of College/ Campus students' programmes.

• To guide and supervise the designing and implementation of University level students' sports programmes.

• To guide and supervise the procurement of College / Campus and University level students' sports equipment and kits.

• To supervise and guide in the maintenance of College/ Campus and University level sports facilities.

• To link all departmental operations with senior University manager, in particular with the office of Vice-Chancellor.

• To hold regular meetings with all College Games Tutors and other staff at least once every two weeks.

• To hold regular meetings with all University level Captains at least twice a semester.

• To guide and supervise the central Departmental staff in their daily duties.

• To represent the University within and outside the country in all sports matters.

• To articulate both staff and students' needs to the university top management.

• To guide and supervise the procurement of central teams equipment and kits.

• Any other duty allocated by Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (AA) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (A&F)



COLLEGE/ CAMPUS GAMES TUTOR RESPONSIBILITY/ ROLE


• Design College/ Campus Students' sports programme in consultation with the Director.

• Ensure that all the College/ Campus sports facilities are regularly maintained.

• Procure students' equipment and kits in consultation with the office of the Director of sports.

• To coach and train College/ Campus sportsmen & sportswomen every evening.

• To organize, implement and supervise College/ Campus students' intra- mural activities.

• To organize internal tournaments within the College/ Campus at least twice per semester in consultation with office of the Director.

• To organize and implement external tournaments for college sportsmen and sportswomen at least once per year in consultation with College principal and the office of the Director, Sports.

• To issue and retrieve sports equipment and kits to the students.

• To ensure that no unauthorized person use College/ campus sports facilities.

• To promote and encourage participation in sports among the University staff.

• To organize regular meetings with the College/ Campus captains and other stakeholders.

• Any other duty assigned by the Director, Sports & Games.


VERSITY LEVEL TEAM COACHES RESPONSIBILITY/ ROLE


• Drawing of teams' weekly training programme for Director's approval.

• Scouting and identifying players for various teams from University campuses under the guidance of Director, Sports & Games.

• Training University teams every evening.

• Ensuring that no none University Students plays for the University teams.

• Accompanying University teams as scheduled by the Director, Sports & Games.

• Assisting in ensuring that only authorized persons use University Sports Facilities.

• Organizing fortnightly tournaments friendlies within University in strict consultation with Director, Sports & Games.

• Assisting the issuance and retrieval of team's equipment and kits under strict guidance of Director, Sports & Games.

• Any other duty assigned by Director, Sports & Games.

Groundsman Responsibility

• Collecting liter in all sports fields and its environs.

• Alignment and arrangement of all goal posts in sports fields.

• Marking of all sports facilities as and when required.

• Installation and removal of goal nets as and when required.

• Supervising casual workers under strict guidance of the Games Tutor in charge.

• Institute and following-up maintenance of goal posts, nets and other related sports facilities.

• Any other duty assigned by the Director, Sports & Games.

 STORE KEEPER/ MESSENGER


• Regular keeping of Central stores equipment/ facility up to date.

• Enter all the procured equipment/ kit in the record book.

• Issue and retrieve equipment/kits to students and any other authorized persons.

• Initiate and over repairs of kit/equipment.

• Label and arrange sports kits/ equipment at the central stores.

• Receive and deliver all mails from Directors office to relevant University offices.

• Regular retrieval of mails from main campus to the department of Sports & Games.

• Deliver any other message from the Director of Sports & Games to the designated university or any other offices.

Secretary/ Copy Typist


• Typing office work.

• Receiving and sending office memos to the relevant offices under Director's guidance.

• Arranging and tiding Director's office.

• Compiling lists of required stationary in the Director's office.

• Compiling and auditing the casual workers list daily.

• Clearing students' online.

• Compiling performance contracts documents under Director's guidance.

• Compiling the ISO 9001-2000 Documents under Director's guidance.

• Any other duty allocated by Director.

Life Saver/ Guard


• Life/guard/Saving all swimmers.

• Treatment of pool water.

• Opening of swimming pool gates for students and other authorized swimmers.

• Cleaning of pool facility.

• Cleaning the lavatories and other related facilities within the pool.

• Any other assigned by the Director, Sports & Games.

Pump/ Pool Attendants

• Treatment of the pool water.

• Distribution of chemicals to other University Swimming pools.

• Cleaning of swimming pool facility.

• Operating Swimming pool filter pump.

• Opening of pool gate(s) for students and other authorized swimmers.

• Maintenance of the vacuum cleaner.

• Maintenance of pool chemicals record book.

• Any other duty assigned by the Director, Sports & Games.

Profile

The University of Nairobi is the oldest institution in Kenya. It Started as a Royal College of East .Africa in the year 1956 and became fully fledged University in 1970. The department of sports and games is therefore as old as the institution itself.

The department of Sports & Games started with one Games Tutor, the only one available in Kenya then. Currently the Department has grown tremendously in terms of staff, Sports facilities and equipment have expanded leading increased number of students participating in Sports and Games at both recreational and competitive level.Most of the University teams are participating at national, regional  and international tournaments.  

Mandate:

  • To provide efficient and effective quality sport and recreational programmes for students at both Campus/College and University levels at recreational and competitive levels.
  • To develop ,expand and renovate Sports facilities and equipment .
  • To maintain state- of- the- art sports facilities and equipment.
  • To identify and nurture talents,train and coach sports techniques.
  • To provide relevant information on the importance of exercise to staff and students.  
  •  To provide innovative Sports services to students and staff in order to maximize their productivity, enhance teaching and learning and improve quality of research.  
  •  To advice the University in all matters related to Sports and Games services and infrastructure; development and implementation of the Sports and Games policy; and the general sports and games strategic direction in relation to the University's vision and mission.

Strategic Objectives

In order to propel the standard of Sport and Games in the University of Nairobi and in line with University wide 2008/2013 strategic plan, the Department of Sports & Games has set out the following as its strategic objectives.

• To develop,expand and renovate Sports facilities and equipments.

• To plan and implement Sports programs to increase students participation in Sports.

• To post Sports programs and information on the importance of erxercises on the departmental website.
