The University of Nairobi’s Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA) organized a one day conference themed, ‘Empowering the youth on civil rights through Education, advocacy and leadership’

Speaking during the World Youth Alliance event, Commission for Administrative Justice, CAJ, commonly referred to us the Ombudsman, Lawyer Otiende Amolo urged the young people to be abreast with the constitution and be aware of their rights.

The youth were further encouraged to report complaints to the Office of the Ombudsman anonymously to avoid victimization.

Speaker after speaker urged the youth to avoid corruption, impunity, tribalism and several ills that have bedevilled our society. The students were as well encouraged to use the social media positively and stay away from political conflicts.

The summit majorly focused on how the youth can and should know their rights and exercise them in a legal manner. Understanding of the constitution was highly emphasized as it is important to avoid manipulation.

Education and knowledge go hand in hand, therefore young people should never

get tired of seeking knowledge. University of Nairobi was appreciated for outsourcing for forums and avenues where the thirst for knowledge can be quenched.

Leadership at a young age should be encouraged more so in institutions and at community level. Organizations like YALDA are a necessity for our society today for playing a role on youth empowerment.  Finding a modest mentor to exemplify will empower young people to prosper.

The moderator of the day was John Oyedele Alonge, PhD student of Journalism and a YALDA member.

The Panelists comprised of Commissioner Belinda Akoth Ochiela, Policy, Advocacy and Communications expert, Justice Dr. Amollo, Secretary General of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association and Dr Busalile Jack Mwimaliis a law lecturer and an advocate of the High Court.
