The University of Nairobi will be a training centre for SUNfarming food and energy production concept where electricity generation is carried out simultaneously with food production.

This was revealed when the CEO, Sunfarming, Mr.  Peter Schrum, paid a courtesy call on the Vice chancellor Prof. Peter Mbithi. Mr. Schrum presented a proposal of how the University and SUNFarming can partner for purposes of research and education while producing clean energy and food using solar and biogas.

Mr. Schrum noted that he believes UoN is a strong partner as it has led in education and innovation in the country. He said that this will solve the high energy consumption the country is facing and food security. The University will be discharging its mandate of advancing manpower in the field in Kenya and beyond while improving the life of the people.

On his part, UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, welcomed the proposal saying that currently the University is expensive to run in terms of Energy consumption. Yet, as a centre of excellence, we are expected to lead in using clean energy and conservation of environment.

“This is a project that will bring colour to the University. There is need for this partnership, as it is in line with the President’s big four agenda. It will assist in solving the issue of food security and energy production under manufacturing,” Prof. Mbithi noted.

SUNFarming GmbH is a Company incorporated in Germany and deals in Solar PV and Biogas projects in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Central America. In Africa, SUNFarming has its operational base in South Africa and is keen on spreading its operations to Eastern Africa from its base in Kenya.

A memorandum of Agreement with the intricate details of operation of this collaboration will be signed on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the Vice Chancellor’s Boardroom.

Present during the meeting was Principal, College of Biological and Physical Sciences, Prof. Bernard Aduda, Principal, College of Architecture and Engineering, Prof. Peter Ngau, Chairman, Department of Physics, Prof. Julius Mwabora among others.
