UoN and Standard Media Group discuss partnership

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the Standard Media Group have entered into discussions on how best to strengthen their existing partnership.

This was revealed when the Standard Media Group, Managing Director, Mr. Sam Shollei paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi.

Among the key issues explored include profiling UoN’s research and innovations breakthroughs on various media platforms owned by Standard Media Group.

In his remarks, Prof. Mbithi noted that the University understands the importance of engaging the media especially in exploring opportunities that will grow the University’s brand while highlighting the research output. Prof. Mbithi proposed to the Media Group to consider endowing a Chair in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SOJMC) in addition to offering mentorship opportunities for students in the School.

On his part, Mr. Shollei said that the Media Group is keen on being part of an institution that is transforming the society. Mr. Shollei congratulated the University on its achievements and urged it to disseminate knowledge from research findings to society through the media. In addition, he challenged the vast and strong academic body in the University to explore various media platforms to share their findings and innovations.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, Prof. Lucy Irungu, welcomed the move noting that partnering with the media on research will not only be limited to disseminating new knowledge but also profiling UoN researchers and the extension activities being conducted the fields through various research projects.

Others who spoke during the meeting include Mr. John Kenduiwo, acting Managing Director, UNES, Dr. Wambui Kiai, Director, SOJMC, Mr, Johnson Ireri, Director for University Advancement and Mr. Charles Sikulu, Public Relations Manager.
