CPST meets IDIS to operationalize their partnership

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the Centre for Parliamentary Studies and Training (CPST) have entered into discussions on the operationalization of the memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The collaborative MoU that was signed on November 30, 2016, will support in strengthening the capacities of the Administrative Staff and Members of Parliament of Kenya as well as the officials of the 47 Counties of Kenya, Members and Staff of the Legislative Institutions within the East African region and Africa at large.

The team from CPST was led by the Director of Curriculum, Training and Research, Dr. Brightone Buchere while the UoN team was led by the Director, Institute for Diplomacy and International Studies, Prof. Amb. Maria Nzomo, agreed to develop certificates, diplomas and degree programmes jointly tailored to the needs of parliament. They also agreed to undertake joint research projects/publications that will be published.  The programme will take the model of the National Defence College (NDC) and Defence Staff College (DSC) trainings by UoN.

As a way forward, the teams agreed to develop diploma and degree programmes in Parliamentary Studies/Diplomacy with common courses options such as Security, Conflict, Economic Diplomacy, Political Diplomacy, Cultural Diplomacy, Budgetary Process, Legislative Research, Resources Management etc. The team will jointly develop actual contents (curriculum and syllabus), timelines/schedule of implementation, various levels (Diploma/Bachelors/Certificates), Costing/fees, admission criteria and how to market the courses to the Parliamentarians, County Assemblies, staff of the two levels of Government and the Legislative Institutions within the African region.

Among those present during the meeting held on February 13, 2017, were Johnson Kinyua, Director University Advancement, John Orindi, Director, Corporate Affairs and Dr. Patrick Maluki, Senior Lecturer IDIS.
