Establishment of the Ethical Research Review Committee
Members shall be nominated by the Director of KNH. Appointment of members shall be made in consultation with the Principal, College of Health Sciences (CHS), Deans of Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dental Sciences in addition to input from relevant KNH-Departments heads and in line with international guidelines.
KNH/UON-ERRC shall have established procedures for identifying or recruiting potential members with outlined duties and responsibilities. Transparency shall be adhered to in order to avoid conflict of interest.
Membership Requirements
Membership shall include -
· At least 18 members · A reasonable number of members who collectively have the qualifications and experience to review and evaluate the science, medical aspects and ethics of the proposed study · Physicians, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory scientists, epidemiologists, and lay persons qualified to represent a range of community, cultural, and moral values · 1/3 representation of either gender · A representative from the Kenya Medical Research Institute Ethics Committee · One legal officer
KNH/UON-ERRC may co-opt non-members with expertise in special areas to give assistance. The investigator may be invited to provide information on any aspect of the study, but may not participate in the KNH/UON-ERRC final decision making. Only members who participate in the review and discussion of the protocol, and who are independent of the investigator and the sponsor, may vote or provide opinion. |
